Doesn’t the alcohol just cook out?

No, only 10% of the alcohol cooks out during the jelly process. It would need to be cooked down to a paste and the flavor is gone at that point. We developed a proprietary method of removing the alcohol without losing the flavor. Our jellies are tested to be well below the required Non-alcoholic status. 

Who came up with the ideas for each unique product and created the Cookbook?

Each current employee created a product during their incarcerated period. They brainstormed with their families, others on our staff, and those they were close to while inside. The ideas for the products and suggested uses were formed through discussions as well. They looked through available cookbooks to get ideas as well. Upon released the team worked together to compile the project. It was designed and finalized by Jim Efstathiou, our graphic designer.

What is your shipping policy?

Herbert’s strives to fulfill orders within 24 hours and use 2-4 day shipping plans. USPS and UPS are currently most often used. Tracking numbers are provided upon printing of the shipping label.

What is your return policy?

Herbert’s will replace any item that arrives damaged though Herbert’s drop shipping. Notify carolyn@herbertswinejelly.comfor return/refund offerings. No replacement or refund will be provided for those purchasing Herbert’s products through other companies (unless they are part of Herbert’s drop shipping. (The return address should indicate Palmyra, VA)

There are sellers on Amazon and E-Bay who are selling Herbert’s Jelly that has older labels and are outdated. These are not in any way connected to the sales from Herbert’s in Palmyra. These are unauthorized dealers. 

How do you help inmates/former inmates?

1. Herbert’s directly hires released felons to perform the jobs necessary to run the company. They are often referred to me through the Parole Officers or Attorneys. 

2. Herbert’s began supporting artists who needed a platform to sell their art and artisan crafts. We call the program Beyond the Fence. We do not charge any artist supply costs to be on this platform. We can sell originals, prints, and note cards with 100% of sales price going to the artist or their family. A contract is signed to ensure the artist we do not use their products for our gain.

Does Herbert’s have any other outreach services?

Herbert’s offers support for the community through speaking at club and civic events. 

We provide inspirational support for anyone struggling with mental health issues. The posting of inspirational sayings on participation in prison ministry events.

We speak to employers to assist in the understanding of reentry and what it means to a business.

What products for Special Events or Weddings?

The most common for weddings are the jellies in smaller sizes, such as 1.5 or 3oz, as they travel easily on a plane for out-of-town guests. Salts are also a favorite. Personalized labels are available.
